Septic systems

How a new septic job goes

In Connecticut, septic work runs through your local health department. Here's the path from first call to final approval.

Site visit

We look at the property, the existing system and access for equipment.

Soil testing

Deep test pits and perc tests, witnessed by the health department.

Design & permit

An engineered plan is approved and a permit to construct is issued.

Installation

Tank, distribution box and leaching system built to the approved plan.

Inspection

The health department inspects before backfill. Then we grade and clean up.

Every town handles scheduling a little differently. We'll tell you what to expect for yours.

Mike's sons, back to work.

Mike Terwilliger with his boys, the next generation of Terwilliger Construction.

My father, Mike Terwilliger, started Terwilliger Construction in 1976 and built it from the ground up. He was always honest, above board and fair with every customer, and that's what the Terwilliger name came to mean across Connecticut.

Now my brothers and I are bringing it back. Same name, same family, same way of doing business. When you call, you talk to one of Mike's sons, and you get a straight answer and a fair price.

Common questions

FAQ

Do you take small jobs?

Yes. A single trench, a drainage problem or one stump is worth a call. No job too small.

Are estimates free?

Yes. We come out, look at the site and give you a written price.

How do I know my septic is failing?

Common signs are slow drains, sewage odors, soggy or bright green patches over the leaching field, and backups after heavy use. Call us and we'll take a look.

Do you handle permits?

We work with your town and health department through soil testing, design approval and inspection, and tell you what you need at each step.

Do you work for contractors?

Yes. Send plans and specs and we'll bid the site work. Certificates of insurance are available on request.
